Haryana Govt Increased The Price Of Sugarcane Despite Sugar Mills Going Into Losses

Sugarcane Production: Sugarcane is known as cash crop all over the world. Sugarcane farming is done on a large scale in India, from which the sugar obtained is being exported all over the world. Haryana is also a major producer of sugarcane. Recently, the Haryana government increased the price of sugarcane by Rs 10 per quintal. Earlier the price of sugarcane was Rs 362 per quintal, which has been increased to Rs 372 per quintal. These prices will be applicable from the sugarcane crushing season. The surprising thing is that the sugar mills of the state are running into losses. Despite this, why did the government increase the prices of sugarcane?

The government appealed to the farmers
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the increase in the price of sugarcane, as the farmers of the state had been demonstrating for a long time to increase the price. Now that the prices have increased, the state government has requested the farmers to continue taking the sugarcane produce to the sugar mills, so that the work of the mills also runs smoothly and it does not stop, because if the sugar mills are closed If this happens, farmers may also have to face problems in selling sugarcane.

In a report, CM Khattar also said that although the prices have not been increased as expected, but farmers are getting much more payment for sugarcane than the proposed price of sugar, due to which the sugar mills are continuously going into losses. On this matter, the government has given priority to protecting the interests of the farmers.

Did sugar mills really suffer loss
The government claims that Haryana’s sugar mills are running into a loss of Rs 5,293 crore. The recovery of sugar in government mills is 9.75%, while 10.24% is being recovered from private mills. Ethanol and power plants are being set up to increase sugar recovery and provide extra income source to the mills.

Work is also going on to increase the capacity of cooperative sugar mills. On this, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar says that a committee was also formed under the chairmanship of the state’s Agriculture Minister JP Dalal to determine the prices of sugarcane. This committee prepared a special report on the demands of sugarcane farmers and submitted it to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

This is how the price of sugar was increased
The committee constituted under the chairmanship of Haryana’s Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister JP Dalal submitted its report, which included recommendations of farmers, cooperative department and private mills as well as agricultural experts. In this, it was said to increase the price of sugarcane by Rs. 8 per quintal, while the state government increased it by Rs. 10 per quintal while fixing the round off price.

Till when do sugarcane farmers get paid
The Haryana government claims that it is paying the farmers on time. Figures for the year 2020-21 show that Rs 2,628 crore was paid to the farmers, while no farmer’s payment was outstanding.

After this, in the year 2021-22, except Narayangarh Sugar Mill, an amount of Rs 2727.29 crore was compensated to the people across the state. The state government has issued instructions to cooperative sugar mills to pay sugarcane farmers within a week.

Meanwhile, the state government has also brought a golden opportunity for the sugarcane farmers, under which the eligible farmers can operate sugar mills themselves. The government is ready to discuss this proposal with the farmers.
